How to read the layout of an apartment: area, passages and useful areas

The apartment plan helps to understand future life, if you look not only at the total area.

Area you use

Start by placing the main items: bed, dining table, sofa and work area. Check whether passages remain with doors open and chairs pulled out. A large number of square meters does not guarantee convenience if a significant part of the area falls on a long corridor or difficult corners.

Connections between rooms

Follow the usual path: entrance, shoe storage, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom. It is especially useful to imagine returning with shopping or a morning when several people are getting ready at the same time. The bathroom door opening directly into the living room and the kitchen far from the entrance create different living conditions.

Check on specific sizes

Use the dimensions from the drawing, not the scale of the advertising picture. If dimensions are not available, ask for them before choosing furniture. While viewing, compare the plan with the position of columns, niches and equipment. For a property under construction, distinguish between the plan of the selected apartment and the example of furniture: beautiful objects in the diagram can be conditional.
