Choosing a kindergarten in Dubai: program, regime, care, safety, language environment and agreement with the center.

A beautiful room and a well-known program name do not show how a child will spend a typical day in kindergarten. To make a choice, it is more important to see the interaction of adults with children, to understand the regime, organization of care and conditions of adaptation. Families need a center that fits the child and accommodates the parents' realistic schedule.

In the UAE, regulation varies by emirate. Here we consider private early development centers in Dubai operating in the KHDA system. A preschool class at a school and an Early Childhood Center may differ in the organization of the day and contract; the same FS1 designation does not in itself make the conditions completely the same.

First define the family task

Write down the child's age, usual sleeping and eating patterns, experiences of being without parents, languages spoken, and features that require help. Then determine what hours the family needs, who drops off and picks up the child, and who can come when needed. This list allows you to weed out unsuitable options before discussing the price.

For parents who need a full-time schedule, comparing morning programs isn't enough. You need to check early admission, cut-off times, holiday calendar, extra hours and late conditions. If the center closes before the end of work, calculate the organization of the remaining time in advance. Don't count on the unspecified opportunity to "stay late sometimes."

For a child who requires a nap, ask to see the rest area and explain how staff accommodates individual naps. Find out what's going on if he doesn't fall asleep, wakes up early, or needs help. The availability of beds does not answer the question of organizing recreation.

Check the status of the center and the group's usual day

Find the center in the official KHDA resources and compare the name, address and services offered. If you choose a branch of a well-known network, check this particular address. The reputation of another branch does not confirm the composition of the team and the conditions of the group where the child is admitted.

Please request to visit the center during normal business hours, respecting child protection guidelines. Notice how adults respond to requests, help with conflict, guide transitions between activities, and respond to fatigue. A prepared tour shows the premises; observing an agreed-upon chunk of the day helps to understand the practice.

Specify the composition of the group, the age of the children, permanent employees and replacement of absent ones. Do not deduce quality only from numbers: the distribution of responsibilities and the availability of an adult during meals, walks and care are important. If management reports a standard, ask to indicate which age group and type of institution it applies to.

The content of the program is more important than the name of the technique

Ask for an example of how a child learns through play: what he does, how the teacher gets involved and how he notices progress. Children may look busy in some photographs, but this does not explain what they are learning or whether they have the opportunity to choose, communicate and explore.

The KHDA Early Years Education Quality Framework looks at learning and curriculum, environment, wellbeing and family engagement. For parents, this is a reason to ask questions not only about preparation for school. Find out how the center helps your child ask for help, negotiate, participate in joint activities and use materials independently.

Test the language environment through real interactions. Who speaks to children and in what language, how do they support a child without English, how are Arabic classes organized? The KHDA Early Years Arabic Policy also applies to children who are not native speakers of Arabic. This does not mean that the entire day is spent in Arabic; The specific organization needs to be clarified from the center.

Care and safety should be described without general promises

We need clear actions from employees, and not just the phrase “everything is safe here.” If your child already has a medical plan, discuss it with the responsible professionals before admission. Do not leave important conditions to a verbal communication to one teacher on the first day.

Adaptation also requires a plan: how the group is introduced, whether a gradual increase in stay is allowed, who monitors the condition and how parents are contacted. The adaptation period cannot be guaranteed in advance for each child. Agree on what observations the team and family will use to change the regime.

Specify the financial conditions of your specific format

The KHDA policy for private Early Childhood Centres, effective 23 March 2026, distinguishes between structured FS1/FS2 or equivalent and flexible attendance. Refusal and return procedures vary by format. Therefore, first determine what kind of agreement the family is signing.

The KHDA specifies that a registration deposit is requested upon formal offer of a site and its acceptance; it should not exceed 10% of the annual cost of the program and is included in the fee. For a structured program, a refund of the deposit is provided upon official notification at least 60 calendar days before the start. For flexible visitation, conditions are specified in the Parent-ECC Contract. These rules were verified on September 27, 2026 and are not a substitute for checking applicability to a particular payment.

Separately receive the cost of selected hours, meals, additional classes and vacations. Find out whether payment is transferred for absences and how termination of a visit is formalized. Don't consider regular absences an automatic waiver of the contract.

The choice can be considered reasonable when the parents understand the child's typical day, know the people responsible and have written terms of care, payment and exit. Then the comparison of centers becomes substantive: the family chooses the appropriate mode and quality of interaction, and not just a convenient address and attractive photographs.
