Two-level apartment: when the stairs help and when they hinder

How to evaluate zone separation, usable area, and daily movements within a duplex.

Function allocation

The main question is what rooms are on each level. Is it convenient to receive guests without going through the bedrooms? Is there a bathroom next to the main common area? If your workplace is upstairs, imagine how many times a day you will have to go up and down.

Square and stairs

Stairs take up space and affect furniture placement. Compare not only the total area with a one-level apartment, but also the sizes of specific rooms. When moving, consider the possibility of lifting large furniture in advance.

Long-term scenario

For a family with small children or a person with limited mobility, safety and accessibility are especially important. Look at the width of the steps, fencing and lighting. Don't expect that all household tasks will always be carried out on only one floor: check this against the plan.
