Losing a job in the UAE: how to prepare a family reserve and check ILOE insurance

28/09/2026 · AL OASIS CAPITAL editorial team

Spouses check documents and family obligations

Family reserve in case of job loss in the UAE: mandatory payments, ILOE conditions, documents, application deadlines and further residence plan.

When a family stops working, they need to manage several tasks simultaneously: pay obligations, check eligibility for insurance benefits, find out their residency status, and choose a future plan. Having a cash reserve helps save time for these decisions. Its size should be calculated based on the payments of a particular family, and not according to the universal advice to accumulate the same amount of salaries for all residents of the UAE.

An important distinction: cash reserves, insurance coverage, and expected employer benefits are different sources. They have different availability conditions. If you combine them into one amount, on paper the family will be protected, but on the day of the next payment the funds may not be available.

Start with commitments that last without salary

Write down the upcoming dates for payment of housing, education, treatment, insurance, transport and debts. Mark periods already paid and expenses that can be reduced. For each change, check the contract: canceling a service and ending the obligation to pay are not always the same thing.

For a family with a student, the cost of switching to a new plan may include ending the paid period and changing classes. The tenant has conditions for early exit and costs for vacating the apartment. The person undergoing treatment has continued medical coverage. It is these circumstances that determine the reserve, and not just the size of the former salary.

Make two plans: stay and look for work, or complete your local commitments and move. For each, include dates, confirmed expenses, and actions required to change the obligations. The second option is useful to calculate in advance even for a family that intends to stay: it shows by what date a decision needs to be made in order not to sign a new large payment without income.

ILOE replaces a portion of income if conditions are met

The ILOE unemployment insurance program is not an unconditional benefit to every person who stops receiving a paycheck. According to the published terms, compensation is 60% of the average base salary for the last six months before job loss. Bonuses and previous gross income cannot be automatically used instead of basic salary.

For the first category, with a base salary of up to 16,000 AED inclusive, the monthly compensation limit is 10,000 AED. For the second category, with a base salary above 16,000 AED, it is 20,000 AED. The maximum for one application is three months. Data verified September 27, 2026 and relates to the terms of the ILOE and not to the individual promise of payment.

The right requires, inter alia, a specified subscription period of at least 12 consecutive months and compliance with payment rules. Voluntary dismissal and dismissal for disciplinary reasons do not entitle you to such compensation. For a new employee, the first premium paid should not be considered sufficient basis for immediate coverage.

The program provides for exclusions by category of participants and other conditions. A business owner, domestic worker, or person with special status should first check the program's eligibility. Even an employee in a covered category needs to verify his certificate, payments and reason for termination.

The application deadline should not be confused with the payment deadline

The terms of the policy provide for filing a claim within 30 days after termination of employment; The case of a labor dispute brought to court is described separately. This is a due date, not a promise that the money will be received on the same day. Documentation and coverage requirements are required, including legal residence in the country.

Retain the termination document with date and reason, proof of insurance, proof of payment, and base salary information. If there is a dispute about the reason for termination or calculations, do not change the facts in the application to comply with the program. Follow the application procedure and clarify which documents are needed specifically in your situation.

In the cash receipts calendar, show the insurance payment separately from the already available balance. Until your claim is processed, don't count on compensation as your only way to pay your next due bill. Even qualified applicants may need to carry their own supplies during the application period.

Link cash plan to residency status and insurance

The cessation of work does not make it possible to derive a single period of further stay for all residents of the UAE. Check the basis of residence, the actual status of documents and the rules of the relevant authority - GDRFA Dubai or ICP. For family members, consider the dependence of their documents on the primary sponsor and possible transfer to another legal basis.

The medical policy is also checked separately. Check your coverage end date and transition conditions, especially for ongoing treatment. Do not assume that the insurance coverage coincides with the last day of work, the date of the last salary or the period of the residence document: these are different circumstances that need to be confirmed.

Analyze employer payments by composition and basis: accrued wages, other stipulated amounts, possible deductions. A disputed charge cannot be considered cash until received. If there are disagreements, save the documents and contact the competent authority for the employer; The federal MOHRE policy does not automatically cover all special jurisdictions.

Calculate the reserve through the decision period

Select the period that the family intends to finance based on contract dates, legal status and the chosen plan. Add up the required payments for this period, confirmed transition or departure expenses and the amount for necessary daily purchases. Then subtract only receipts that are confirmed to be available and due. Do not include refundable deposits prior to receipt in free money.

Keeping a reserve should ensure the ability to pay obligations on time. Funds that cannot be withdrawn without selling the asset, a lengthy procedure, or loss of access do not fully solve this problem. Check the payment currency and account access, especially if relocation is considered as a backup option.

After every job change, lease renewal, or school contract change, review your calculations. A prepared reserve does not guarantee a quick job search. It allows the family to make decisions within clear time frames and costs while maintaining legal status and the ability to meet obligations.
