Make a list before purchasing tickets if treatment is permanent

For each drug, record the active ingredient, form, dosage, number of packages, and patient. For a combination product, list all active ingredients. This allows you to compare the medicine with the official list, even if the brand name in the UAE is called differently.

A convenient entry looks like this: “patient - drug - international name of the substance - dosage - doctor’s prescription - quantity for the trip - documents.” It does not contain a decision on admissibility; this is the initial data for verification. If the name of the substance cannot be determined with certainty, check with your doctor or pharmacist for the specific container.

Start earlier when the drug cannot be skipped or quickly replaced. The purpose of the inspection is to prepare the legal route of entry and the continuity of the prescribed treatment. Stopping the medication to make it easier to travel without a doctor does not solve this problem.

Where to check the active ingredient

The current service for importing personal medicines is available on the Emirates Drug Establishment, EDE portal. Materials on controlled and semi-controlled drugs are also published there. Comparison is carried out according to the active substance and the restrictions of the corresponding position. Do not use this article as a list of approved brands. Such a list quickly becomes outdated and does not take into account the composition of different forms of one product. For a specific medicine, you need a test result for a specific substance on the date of travel.

Pre-clearance: why the answer doesn't boil down to one word

On the EDE page verified on September 27, 2026, the advance electronic service is described as optional for travelers. For controlled substances, documents are specified and the quantity is limited to the patient's needs, for a maximum of three months. A different procedure is described for delivering medications to residents via a carrier.

At the same time, the Dubai Customs page formulates stricter requirements for certain psychotropic drugs, mentioning the approval of the health authority. Therefore, the word “optional” does not imply that any pills can be freely transported through any point of entry.

For a controlled drug, a reasonable working path is to contact the EDE in advance with the exact composition and documents, obtain a written explanation and, if the service is available, obtain a pre-approval. If you still have a question about customs clearance, check with the entry point authority. This is a preparatory measure for divergent formulations, and not a statement that approval is required for each drug.

Documents to prepare

A controlled medication will require a documented link between the patient and the prescription. The EDE page separately lists the prescription, medical report, and documentation requirements for narcotic and psychotropic drugs. The exact kit and form of certification should be confirmed for your category.

Check that the patient, drug, dosage and duration of treatment are clear from the documents. If the prescription uses one name and the packaging uses another, ask your doctor to explain the consistency of the ingredients. Scattered papers with different spellings make verification difficult, even when it comes to one medium.

Clarify in advance the requirements for language, age of the document and confirmation of its authenticity. A translation may help read the assignment, but does not replace certification if required. Packing and transportation

Keep the original packaging with readable ingredients and dosage. Do not pour the entire supply into an unmarked container: this space saving deprives the medicine of clear identification. If a pill box is used, provide a way to display the original drug and its documentation.

For products with temperature conditions, coordinate transportation in advance with your doctor, manufacturer and airline. The refrigerator in the future room does not answer the question of storage during the flight. It is not expected that aircraft personnel will necessarily take the drug for storage.

Fluids, coolants, devices and needles may have separate aviation safety requirements. The permission to import medicine and the admission of a specific item into hand luggage are two checks.
