University in the UAE: how to calculate the cost of the entire program, not just one year

The cost of tuition on the university page is a starting point, but not yet the student’s full budget. The family will have to pay not only for classes: they may need a preparatory program, accommodation, transportation, registration of student status and additional educational materials. When comparing, it is important to understand for what period the price is quoted and what will be needed to complete the chosen program.

UAE universities have different fee structures and funding terms. You cannot transfer fees from one campus to another or consider programs with a similar name the same. A reliable calculation is based on the offer of enrollment, payment terms and documents for a specific academic year.

Start with the path to diploma

Write down the program name, campus, mode of study, and planned duration. Check whether a Foundation or other preparatory stage is required and whether it is included in the published cost. If a student expects to transfer with credit for previously studied disciplines, request a decision on the credit: waiting for a shortened period does not confirm it.

For a multi-campus program, check the cost of each step. For example, Heriot-Watt separately indicates 2+2 tariffs with training in Dubai and the UK. The price of the Dubai stage does not prove the same cost of the subsequent period in another country.

Ask the university to explain whether the amount is expressed per academic year, semester, credit, or entire program. If payment depends on disciplines, it is important to know the required amount and rules for retaking. Without this information, comparing two beautiful annual prices may hide different duration and composition of training.

What is included in the tuition fee

It is necessary to establish which classes and resources are paid for at the base rate, and which are billed separately. This is especially important for practical programs: materials, studio work, and supplies may vary by course. They should not be considered mandatory for every student in advance, but they should not be left unchecked.

The Heriot-Watt table for 2026/2027 shows fees for practice materials, re-training and reassessment fees separately. For re-assessment/re-examination/remedial work 152 AED per course is published. This is a specific additional fee for a given university and period, and not the cost of retaking in all universities in the UAE.

It is better for the university to formulate the question precisely: “What additional payments are possible on my program, what causes them to be charged and where is the amount fixed?” The answer will help you separate regular expenses from expenses that only arise under certain circumstances.

Discount and scholarship: check the terms and conditions

The stated discount may apply to the first year or may require the fulfillment of conditions for renewal. Request written confirmation of what portion of the fare it covers, what other benefits it is compatible with, and what you need to save for the next steps.

If the amount of support depends on academic performance, specify the method and time of verification. If the benefit is due to early payment, check the deadline and allowable payment. A manager's verbal promise cannot be automatically included in the budget for the entire program as a guaranteed cost reduction.

Make a basic calculation based on the confirmed conditions and separately estimate the amount without the extended benefit. This is not a prediction of loss of scholarship. This option indicates whether the family will be able to continue studying if the conditions of support change or the student does not meet the criteria.

Accommodation, transport and student registration

Heriot-Watt explicitly states that tuition fees do not cover accommodation and transportation, and university visa support is paid separately. For another university, the composition of services may be different: you need to check your own offer, and not consider this example as the general norm.

When comparing housing, take into account the contract term, deposit, utilities, internet and vacation periods. A room with a low monthly price may turn out to be more expensive at the end of the year if the contract cannot be reduced to the actual length of stay. Also inquire about accommodation options before classes start and between class periods.

For transportation, evaluate the actual route and class schedule. Shuttle availability does not mean it is suitable for late lab work or all visiting days. These issues affect regular expenses, so they are best addressed before choosing housing.

Money calendar and program cost

In addition to the total amount, you need a payment calendar. Installment plans spread the money over time, but do not necessarily reduce the cost. Mark the deposit and check whether it is counted towards tuition: if so, it cannot be added a second time to the full tuition fee.

Do not multiply the current annual price by all years, presenting the result as a confirmed cost, unless the university has fixed future rates. Keep known amounts and uncollected terms separately. This makes the calculation less glamorous, but helps the family understand where financial uncertainty remains.

Refund: Please read before your first payment

Find out what happens if a place is refused, admission is transferred or there is a problem with student registration. The basis for the return, the date of notification, the required documents and the type of payment are important. The word “deposit” by itself does not explain when the money is returned.

You should check your offer of admission and current university policies together. Save proof of payment and correspondence regarding terms and conditions. The complete education budget should show not only the cost of admission, but also the opportunity to complete the program to the end on financial terms understandable to the family.
